Day 2 - Fridays

5/2/14

Today was volunteer day. The school had a breakfast for any parent volunteers that came in. Surprisingly, much of the faculty was there, but no volunteers, so Joe and I got to take some later in the day. I also met Mrs. Merritt today, whose husband taught me history in my sophomore year. Apparently the third grade teacher was out today, as well, so they had a sub, who happened to be my mom's friend, who's recently retired from teaching.

On to teaching! I learned today that Tillman's schedule works on four different types of days: A, B, C, and D. On each day, different sections from each class come to work in their time frame, so while we always start the day working with the fifth graders, each day we have a different group of fifth graders. So we basically did the same things that we did with yesterday's classes, only today was a bit more lax, since it's a Friday. For the lower grades, we mostly just worked on a few songs and then put in a DVD for them to watch. The third graders worked with their recorders again, and were starting to learn some songs for recorder karate. There were a few kids who were having some trouble, so I helped them out while Joe tested the rest. By the end, two of the three kids I was helping had tested and gotten their white "belts" before we ran out of time, though if we hadn't, I think the third would have been successful as well.

Then the day was over, and I was free from the surprisingly tiring day. I'm looking forward to Monday.

  1. Connor, this sounds like a very gratifying project. I'm sure Joe loves having you there. It must be so much more fun for him to have someone who's able to help him and someone who's so good with kids. Thanks for the post!
